Review: Kaibae Baobab Fruit Powder

I heard that the Whole Foods near me was about to carry Kaibae Pure Organic Baobab Fruit Powder, and then I was lucky enough to try it out. As you know, I am a regular smoothie maker / drinker.

Here’s why I almost never use protein powder in my smoothies: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that the average American male consumes 102 grams of protein per day, while the average female eats about 70 grams. That’s almost twice the daily recommended intake established by the Food and Nutrition Board.* We already eat way too much protein! Unless you are a body builder or professional athlete, or a vegan, you probably do not need to worry about getting enough protein in your diet. In fact, too much protein is not a good thing, so I say, skip the protein powder.

So what are some great powdered alternatives? (In case you’re wondering, powders are great for nutrients but mostly because they give smoothies that perfect, creamy texture.) I like spirulina, wheatgrass, acai berry powder, and now added to my list of favorites is Baobab. It doesn’t have a prominent taste, which I like because I can add it to any and all smoothies (although, beware: the one ingredient it didn’t mix well with was Greek yogurt).

Delicious Food

Baobab fruit is a nutrient-powerhouse; it has vitamin C, calcium, potassium, antioxidants & fiber. These nutrients boost immunity, sustain energy, support healthy digestion and nourish the skin; plus, fiber keeps you full. I have to say, drinking smoothies with Kaibae in them has kept me full for so many hours, which is very unusual for me.

Kaibae (parenthetically: for some reason, I always hear an Australian person saying this word when I read it) was founded by a naturopathic physician, Dr. Luc Maes. From the website:

Baobab, the Tree of Life, grows throughout the African Savanna and has been cherished by communities for centuries. Our Baobab is wildcrafted in Northern Ghana. Your purchases benefit these communities, improving access to education & healthcare.

VERDICT

I loved this stuff because it made my smoothies creamy without changing the flavor. It’s useful, it’s ethical AND good for you. Hop on down to Whole Foods and try it for yourself!
